What the Best Daily Players Do Differently

We analyzed every fully-solved daily puzzle in our database — looking at hint usage, time, and how each scoring component contributes to the final number. The pattern is unmistakable, and it goes against what most new players assume.

The fastest solve doesn't win. The cleanest one does.

1. Hints Are the Single Biggest Score Lever

The average score by hints used tells the story by itself:

  • 1 hint: average 185 points
  • 2 hints: average 181
  • 3 hints: average 142
  • 4 hints: average 127
  • 5 hints: average 108

That's a ~77-point swing between the most disciplined finishers and players who burn through all 5 hint rounds. Each hint round costs you 10 points in unused-hint bonus plus every letter it reveals drops from 5 points (solved yourself) to 1 point (revealed).

2. Top Scorers Earn ~80% of Their Points From Their Own Deductions

For players in the top 10% of daily scores, the breakdown averages:

  • 155 points from letters they solved themselves (≈ 79% of the score)
  • Just 12 points from hint-revealed letters (≈ 6%)
  • ~29 points from the unused-hint bonus and speed bonus combined

For the top 1%, the picture is even sharper: an average of 195 self-solved letter points and only 6.6 from hints. They essentially earn the entire grid the hard way — and the bonus pile takes care of itself.

3. Restraint, Not Speed, Separates the Quartiles

Compare the top scoring quartile vs the bottom scoring quartile:

  • Top quartile — median hints used: 3
  • Bottom quartile — median hints used: 5

Two hint rounds. That's the entire delta between a top-quartile and bottom-quartile score. The top-quartile players aren't faster typists — they just commit to fewer reveals.

4. Speed Is the Tiebreaker, Not the Headline

Top-1% finishers do solve quickly (around 3 minutes 17 seconds on average), but the speed bonus tops out at 50 points. Even at the maximum, it's a smaller swing than a few extra hint rounds. Speed sorts ties and rewards sharpness — it doesn't create the whole gap.

The Data-Driven Play

If you want to climb the daily leaderboard, the order of operations is clear:

  1. Stare at the grid before you tap "Hint." Every minute spent thinking is worth 10+ points.
  2. Treat each hint round as a 10-point withdrawal from your bonus, plus a downgrade on every letter it touches.
  3. Let speed be a side effect. Solve cleanly first; the seconds take care of themselves.
