21,389 Eight-Letter Words: A Few Things We Learned
How many eight-letter words do you actually know?
Probably more than you think — but considerably fewer than the total number that can be found across dictionaries, technical references, historical texts, and specialized vocabularies.
The CrossEights dictionary contains 21,389 eight-letter words, selected to exclude technical, archaic, and extremely obscure words, along with proper nouns.
Once we started looking at the list, a few interesting patterns emerged.
S is the undisputed champion
Of the 26 letters, S is the most common starting letter by a considerable margin. There are 2,744 eight-letter words beginning with S — nearly 13% of the entire dictionary.
The next most common are:
- C: 2,040 words
- P: 1,662 words
- B: 1,427 words
At the other end of the spectrum, the alphabet gets much quieter.
Some letters didn't make the cut
The original collection of eight-letter words included a small number beginning with X and Z. But after reviewing them for the CrossEights dictionary, every one of them was removed.
The reason? They were simply too technical, obscure, or unfamiliar to make for enjoyable puzzles. That means there are currently no CrossEights words beginning with X or Z.
The letter Y, however, survived the curation process. There are 52 eight-letter words beginning with Y in the dictionary, including familiar examples such as yearbook, yearning, and youngest.
These words may be relatively rare compared with words beginning with S, C, or P, but they are recognizable enough to appear naturally in CrossEights puzzles.
English is not evenly distributed
If 21,389 words were distributed evenly across the alphabet, each letter would begin about 823 words. Only one letter — E, with 833 words — comes particularly close to that average.
Instead, the distribution is heavily skewed. The three most common starting letters — S, C, and P — account for nearly one-third of the entire dictionary. Meanwhile, some letters are represented by only a fraction of that number, and two letters, X and Z, have been eliminated entirely through the curation process.
Why so many S words?
Part of the answer is that S does a lot of work in English. It appears in a number of productive prefixes and word families: sub-, semi-, super-, self- and others. It also begins many common word patterns and can combine with other consonants in ways that many letters cannot.
The result is an unusually large and varied collection of eight-letter words beginning with the same letter.
A different kind of alphabet
The familiar alphabet gives every letter equal billing. The English dictionary certainly does not. In the CrossEights universe of 21,389 words, S begins 2,744 words. X and Z begin none.
And somewhere in between is Y — with words like yearbook, yearning, and youngest proving that even the less common letters can still earn a place in the puzzle.
The next time you are trying to identify an eight-letter word from just a few letters, remember: not every starting letter gives you the same number of possibilities. In the world of eight-letter words, the alphabet is anything but equal.
